One of the biggest shortcomings of the current generation WRX is the shiftier. On this generation they have gone from the previous linkage design to a new cable operated one and the results aren’t great.
Now I’m not saying that the shifter is terrible, coming from the Aveo I had before this car it initially seemed wondrous, but compared to cars that don’t suck it has more play in its action than you would really like to feel in something with sporting pretensions.
Up until recently there haven’t been a lot of options, there is a factory SPI short shifter that is an option, but at over 300$ it is a bit pricey and if you believe the NASIOC it’s not all that great. Fortunately as I discovered in a late night browsing session on Tuesday night about a week ago Kartboy finally completed their design and opened up a group buy at 95$. It was late, I was irrational and it was cheap enough that I decided to pull the trigger.
Ignoring my first attempt at getting !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this will be the first real modification I’ve done to my car. Fingers crossed this one is more useful and doesn’t end up being undone with in 6 hours like that one was.
From reading the forums where the manufacturer was answering questions on the product and install I learned that having an extra long 3/16” punch, an extra long socket extension and a universal joint for it make the install much easier.
Since I don’t currently own any of those and love an excuse to buy more tools, on my lunch break Wednesday I headed off to see what I could find. At Sears I found a set of punches that had the one mentioned in the forum, they were a bit pricy at 30$ buy they were made in america, they were made out of good steel and said they had a heat treat (these are good things to have when your going top be beaten with a hammer) so I said screw it I’ll have them forever and bought them. It also doesn’t hurt that if I do manage to break them returns will be easy. I also went ahead and got an 1/8” punch some said was helpful to have and I don’t plan on walking to the store to buy one when I find out I need it later.
For the U-joint and extension they didn’t have what I wanted so I picked up some cheapies at Home Depot. Lets hope I don’t regret this decision.
I was really hoping that the parts would show up Thursday so I could get them installed before going away for the weekend, but of course they didn’t. Alas they did finally arrive today, Friday, at lunch time and here they are:
Nice! Now I just have to wait till Monday evening and see if I can get them installed in my apartment parking lot before it gets dark.
